Puffs of Fun

Kate Spade may no longer be there but that doesn't mean her bags aren't as exciting as they were when they started many years ago...

It may not exactly be blizzarding outside yet, but thoughts of snow have definitely taken the purse world by storm. Yes, it’s true. The puffer, that elusive fashion statement that either flies or flops, has ventured beyond the limited realms of outdoor clothing, and been developed into handbags with only positive connotations. Keeping in spirit with the purpose of down insulation being warmth, these puffer purses also provide warmth- for the soul.

I myself have had quite a love affair with the puffer concept, my purchases ranging from an ill-fitting men’s North Face at the age of fourteen to a new Burberry vest that’s even currently on the way. Hit or miss, I’ve loved my puffers for one soul reason- that cozy feeling. They emanate that feeling of hot chocolate, toasty fires, and snow angels, always radiating a sheer sense of comfort and love that one can’t help but relish in the frosty wintertime. Yet, is it really possible for puffers to truly translate into extensions of style, or are they just doomed to appear as mere marshmallows on our arms?

According to my online purchase of Kate Spade’s Silver Snowmass Stevie in August, puffers can be stylish. Also, this opinion was confirmed by a much higher authority, the September issue of Vogue, the ultimate source of fashion to come. At first there was just the Stevie, which comes in colors ranging from black and silver to a bright green. Soon after, the plump bag was followed by the Snowmass Griffen, a taller and more slender tote take on the design, and now with Gucci adding white puffs to purple patent leather in a Boston Bag, the sky is the limit, (or at least as long as snow still falls).

It must be stated that these little puffs of fun are not for everyone. They’re simple and quite plain. They have no real hardware or a delicate design. So if your one whose everyday purse must transfer to dress and evening seamlessly, these bags are not for you. They are what they are, but isn’t that why we love them? They don’t need to flaunt their accessories because their beauty is within the spirit that they capture so brilliantly. They’re just what they emulate- fun, and given their perfect expression of that fun, they are destined to become a part of the winter scene from which they get their inspiration.
