Bag Trends: Bags for Summer and Beyond

As long as it is still warm out - these bags will never go bad...

Toes in sand. Waves crashing. Ultimate relaxation. Yes, that’s right, there is nothing like a summer day at the beach. And if you are a fashion slave like the rest of us, a day at the beach means looking trendy no matter how hot the sun is.

One of the most important accessories for fashionistas along all shores is the beach bag. Some prefer to have one bag for the season that matches all beach attire, like myself; while others might have more then one tote deemed sand worthy.

This summer, I have spent time on a variety of beaches and have found two types of women: some that care about fashion and others that only mind functionality. Earlier in the season, I was sunning myself on a trendy beach in New Jersey. A young woman in front of me came trotting onto the sand with her beautiful Balenciaga bag. When she plopped it on the sand, my friends and I let out a near screech of horror. Even though we may not all have Balenciaga bags for the beach, we were able to stay trendy this season by snatching up straw bags. Below is my straw bag for the summer, which I picked up at a local street fair. It was a hit and did not cost $1500!

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I was recently in Lake George, NY vacationing with my family. While sitting by the pool, I observed all of the women and the bags they were hauling. Mostly filled with towels and toys for their kids, these bags were large in size and nothing special in texture or print. I found myself wondering if these women still cared about having a beach bag that related to these seasons trends. Maybe when they were young these women cared about how they looked. Or are some of us too addicted to fashion, making us slaves to trends forever?

1. Very well written, Grandaughter - MAMA from NJ, September 10, 2007.
2. I don't know about some people, but I certainly care about having a beach bag that relates to this season's trends. And I would *never* put *my* Balenciaga bag on the sand! Seriously, who does that? - Jay from CT, September 13, 2007.
