Considering at Handbag Designer 101, our goal is to support the independent handbag designer whether it be a handmade designer who is based in Idaho or Ireland or a budding luxury brand out of London or Los Angeles.  We do not discriminate from talent, hard work and creativity.  We do however, have developed quite the following for our Celebrity Bag Watch section.  After an interesting trend meeting, we all had this obvious realization that brand name handbags need to cost at least $1000.  Is it for status? Is it because our favorite celebrities have this disposable income to buy bag after bag? Is it because it is in style and they must be seen wearing the latest "it" bag? We decided to get to the bottom of this.

In Cassandra Reza's piece about Ashlee Simpson's Prada Tessuto Gauffre Hobo bag, you all had plenty to say.  However, no one ever makes comments anymore about price of $1290.  Is one saving their money for this item or just going into debt because it is just a hot bag?  Another bag that now is seen on the arms of many celebrities like Courteney Cox and Jennifer Lopez is the YSL Muse bag which is at the now acceptable price of $1295.  However, in our beloved Jaime Lynn's story about Ashley Olsen's Vintage Fendi Croc tote proves that all the money in the world still doesn't change the fact that bag doesn't fix a hot mess - not even $9000+.

What do you think about this? Are you all saving your money to be just like these gals?  Just because it is my job to continue to be the patron saint of the independent handbag designer - please - continue to check out our Designer of the Day and support the cause of getting something that no one else may have and you may even have some money left over for your rent and maybe even lunch too...

1. The most I have ever spent on a bag was 1600 and I sortof regret it, now I keep it less than 1,000 unless it is absolutely fabulous, there is a purple patent chloe bag that I adore for 2,000, but that is like my mortgage payment for one month so I cannot justify the purchase, I could buy a nice new leather sofa for the price of the bag, so its a little overpriced when you compare it to other consumer goods....just a though, but it is handy and its not like I carry the sofa with me everyday....like a bag...so we will see... - Tara Sauvage from WA, February 17, 2008.
2. There are two realities in the celeb handbag world that I wish to comment upon. Firstly, the stars stylists most often choose the bags for their clients, and the stylists are also often paid by the big brands out of their advertising budget. They also gift the stars with the bag of their season which they are trying to push to become the 'it' bag. One top PR firm in London told me that the big British stars are gifted up to 20 designer handbags a month! Secondly, the one thing that the big brands have in common are that they are mostly European made. With the cost of leather, lots of leather consumption with big bags being in fashion, high ( but good)labor costs, and the weak dollar ,and high gas prices making shipping costs skyrocket a medium priced handbag will cost around 125 euros.Add 20... - Melissa Loyd Maish from Florence Italy, February 18, 2008.
3. I love this article and I love ya Em... I have to say that I am a sucker for beautful craftsmenship and a whore for a name brand... but don't the two go hand in hand... I have to say though some of the independents have made some really amazing things but aren't they hoping to have the next it bag Kiwi? I agree with Melissa I know that the stars are sooo not paying for the bags, they pay for themsevles... girls like me see the stars carrying the bag and then if I fall in love with the bag I am sooo buying it... nothing to do with who the star is but honey I would rather have bags then a sofa anyday... to all the independents, I promise to feature you when I open my store.... - Jaime Lynn from NYC, February 26, 2008.
