Bag Trends: The Fringe Report

Can see through those bangs of yours? Well fringe is in. Our Irish lass via China who knows first hand what this is about.

Fringes are back with a bang! (I am forgiven this pun, as technically 'bangs' is not a colloquial term for a hairstyle in Britain!) But before you get any ideas about attacking your hair with your strimmer, or taking a pair of scissors to your 'frankie says relax' T-Shirt, STOP! This has nothing to do with unflattering crimes against hair or the 80's! This is Prada darling, and this trend is an homage to the fabulous flapper starlets of hollywood's silent screen. Elegant, flamboyant and utterly luxury, Prada sent girls side to side slap slapping and sashaying down runways and the reverberations sent shivers through the echelons of the fashion world.

This trend is particularly applicable to handbags, as not every woman wants to deal with the extra bulk of top to tail tassles, but this season volume is, well big, and if you cant quite carry that off, let your arm candy deal with it! Fringing is swinging in soft supple suedes, long beaded leathers, and its thick and expensive! You might want to go visit your grandmother next weekend, and bring her a gss of sherry or two, I bet you she has a few fringed bags tucked away from her foxtrot days, and while your at it, get her to tach you to knit, its going to be much cheaper than buying those 'handy craft' bags that are going to be the next big thing...but thats another trend report, keep you posted! Please feel free to ask me anything fellow bag ladies, I appreciate comments! And always remember, you carry yourself first, and the bag second, so whatever you carry, do it with pride!

1. fringe was big last fall. Get ready to raid grandmas closet though, because stiff 50s style handbags are coming back with avengeance. Check out the runways for fall II and Holiday 08. Square bags, long bags, wierd shaped bags coming for spring '08. As for fringe, other than a few, I have not seen much. the trend for soft bags is on its way out. - Arlene Nilsson from ca, August 17, 2007.
2. Hi Arlene! You are a true handbag nerd too!Tis true, actually I wrote this piece in June when the prada collection was massive and fringed hobos were the only it bag! I'm wondering if your handbag line is going to be following suit with the foxy boxy bags of the 1940's?! If so put me on the list!(however the tassels on the new Gucci it bag 'in...'(something, I forget) inanana? might bely the claim fringe isnt still swingning!;-) jojo @ IBC - Joanna @IBC joanna@internationalbag.com from China/London, August 17, 2007.
3. What about craft bags and KNIT? - Linda from GA, August 20, 2007.
4. OH LINDA! Dont get me STARTED! You are so right, when the bastian of formal lady bags FENDI brought out their biggest hit and it looks like BIG BIRD would carry it, you know craft is big. This new Fendi bag..seriously sesame street! But I love it...wheres my 'knitting Jenny', remember them?Actually ecclectic is emerging as a theme (basically fashion term for...urm, no one seems to have consilidated the themes!?!) Theres a serious trend towards the following. Knitted bags, hand craft look bags, boxy 40's bags, bags with belt round them, beautiful laminated kid leather bags, red bags, and the new prada glove clutch. Actually, that was just my Christmas list! Any more questions please please let me know any more questions! - joanna@internationalbag.com from London/China, August 21, 2007.
5. WOW! Joanne, with this reading I am hopefully seeing handbag Haute Couture at it's best! (50's icons)...from Hollywoods - Doris Day to FASHIONS DIVINE DESIGN - (in my opinion) Ms. Coco Chanel, Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy...and the adorably fashionable - Ms. Audrey Hepburn. How GOOD can it get. OMG, add the wardrobe extroidinaire and it's...runway - here we come...however, for handbag connoisseur's like myself it may be somewhat difficult to view that great outfit through the starry handbag glasses we are wearing. Sounds too, like it might be time to pull out the design closet and get my Knit Couture bag line rolling? - Linda from GA, August 22, 2007.
6. By the way, I love your designs!...Did anyone mention CHRISTMAS LIST? ... Best, and keep those great articles coming! - Linda from GA, August 22, 2007.
7. Too many (key) fingers, sorry I mispelled your name, Joanna. - Linda from GA, August 22, 2007.
8. Hi Joanna, Can you point me in the direction of knit bag designers for the FALL season ... THANKS - Linda from GA, August 24, 2007.
