Being relatively new in Shanghai, there is still a lot that I have to learn to fit in. Someone suggested curling my hair because she thought it was not dazzling enough for the city. I said, “No, thanks.” I am also against the idea of wearing sequins and glitters on one shirt. Chunky jewels on evening clutch – I can definitely relate to that.
The ladies of Shanghai love to keep up with the current trend. With many malls and shops around the city, it is easy to keep stylish. I came across Miss Wang at Plaza 66, a luxurious mall which houses top brands. I noticed her Louis Vuitton bag and had to ask her if it was real. She made sure it was. Hanging on her other shoulder is a colorful, unbranded bag, which she probably got from Carrefour for 5 Yuan (roughly 73 cents). Since June 1st, China has restricted the use of plastic bags in supermarkets, bakery and most of the street-side shops. Now we need to pay for the usual grocery plastic bags or we can buy these this kind of reusable shopping bags with many colors and patterns to choose from. By having these two bags from different worlds, Miss Wang was on a mission to save the environment and her soul from being sold to the fake bag devil. What a brave girl.
5 Yuan may cost nothing for Miss Wang, but not for the other ladies in town. Waiting to cross Nanjing Road one morning, I met these two BFF. They have their packed lunch - and everything they might need for the day - in a plastic bag. The bag is what you can get from a chase at regular shop. Usually they will wear the plastic bag until holes and tears consume it. Free bags are still better than spending 5 Yuan on a colorful one that does the same. With the plastic bag giveaway era ending, I wonder what kind of bag will these ladies turn to. On top of adjusting to a new lifestyle in Shanghai, I might have to buy a hairclip from Marc Jacobs just so I can use the shopping bag to work tomorrow.
