I planted myself on the corner of 14th and 9th, the heart of the Meatpacking District to see what NYC women are wearing this summer. With temperatures in the 90’s and ladies outfitted in whimsical summer dresses, gladiators, and American Apparel attire (in colorful Ray-Bans of course), I thought I’d see small, sophisticated pieces to compliment this carefree look. However, the streets told me otherwise. Simply put, NYC women like big bags.
Whether it has a big monogrammed logo (Chanel), identifiable characteristics (Fendi ‘s buckle and mesh), or bold prints, NYC ladies are outfitted with substantial pieces—sometimes even two bags at a time. From workout clothes, to mid day snacks, a good read, and a spare change of shoes, a big bag accommodates all sorts of accoutrements.
One Fashionista told me, “I keep my life in there…my wallet needs to be big so I can pull it out fast, I need inside pockets so I can find important stuff, and I always carry a spare pair of shoes! AND, I still want a bigger bag.”
No doubt that NYC women are always on-the-go and big bags are a must! Plus, big bags compensate for our very small closets. Ah, the life of a New Yorker…..
