Piping is fabric-covered cording, sewn into a seam to provide extra strength and a decorative finishing touch. Piping can be purchased, but you can also make your own. Here are some tips for best results when creating piping.
• Cut fabric to be used for covering cording on the bias. This produces the most attractive piping because it easily follows the shape of curved and angled seams. If making piping from suede or leather, cut the strips following the crosswise grain. These materials usually have the most stretch or give on the cross grain.
• To determine the width needed to cover the cording, wrap the fabric around the cord, making sure to add seam allowances. Measure this total width to calculate the size of strips that will need to be cut.
• Place cording on the wrong side of the strip and fold in half lengthwise, matching raw edges wrapping the strip around the cording. Using a zipper foot, machine-baste close to the cording.
