Smocking:
This is a traditional technique usually done by hand; using your sewing machine can be a great time saving tool. Smock the fabric first and then cut out the pattern piece.
1) Set the straight stitch at the longest stitch length with the upper tension loosened slightly. (Don’t forget to re-set the tension when done.)
2) Sew 4 rows of stitching 1-inch apart.
3) Tightly gather the fabric in by pulling the thread and secure the thread ends.
4) Press the gathers lightly with a warm iron.
5) Using a honeycomb or other decorative stitch and stitch through the center between each stitching (gathering) line. Press and remove straight (gathering) stitching by pulling on bobbin thread.
