How to Shorten a zipper

It can be difficult to find a 3 inch zipper for a small pocket or embellishment on a handbag. The good news is any closed bottom zipper can be shortened. There are two methods—from the top or from the bottom.

To shorten from the bottom:
1. Close the zipper and measure the desired length. (For an invisible zipper, add 1” )
2. Whipstitch tightly across the coil o rteeth 8 to 10 times with a double thread.
3. Cut the zipper ½” below the stitches.

To shorten from the top:
1. Measure the desired length of the zipper or install the zipper, placing the bottom stop at the desired length.
2. Open the zipper. (Very Important! This assures that the slider will be BELOW the cut.)
3. Stitch a bar tack by hand or machine over the teeth on one side of the zipper using matching thread.
4. Cut off the excess zipper.
