| I LOVE HANDMADE, creating something special as gifts
for my family and friends when I was very young. I really enjoy the process and
I keep this interest even when I got my design job. These creations gain me many
positive feedbacks and encouragement from friends which push me to keep going
further. In 2008, I founded Libby La Soup’s Workshop (which is also my tiny
bedroom) as my very personal brand of handmade products. Later, it started my
handmade life in Sunday markets, consignment shops and exhibitions around Hong
Kong. I defined myself as a fabric-based handmade artist at first, and I
like to use diverse combination of colors and patterns for patchworks. Most of
them are colorful and cute, e.g. patchwork “hen bag”, bird and cage embroidery
etc. These products are very popular with high school girls and young ladies.
Later, I’d like to found more variety of my products, so I started using leather
and exploring the texture of hand stitches.
Libby La Soup’s Workshop is a funky lovely brand, specializes in designing
delicate bags and decent accessories with elements from nature and daily life.
It is also in combination of sweet and pleasant, as well as an expression of
yearning for freedom, love and happiness. “Adaptor” comes as a secondary line
for unisex items. Adaptor products convert any idea to be “compatible” with
fabric and culture! The hero products are envelope bag and money bag, with sense
of humor on stylish design. I like to pay attention to details, e.g. the eye of
the leather hen bag is a bell on a copper button, it rings when carrying. People
who see my money bag at first, they come to 2 reactions, 1) love it and buy, 2)
scare that they’d be robbed…
I’m living with my family and my bedroom is the only place I can work. The
workshop is a room not more than 50 sq feet, which is quite common in such a
small place in Hong Kong. Sometimes, I have to extend my working area to living
room for more spaces. I got tons of fabric, leather, accessories and tools which
occupies every corner in my flat!! And every time I need to start my work, I
have to dig them out, fabrics and tools all over the floor. Nevertheless, the
nightmare is after working all day long, I have to tidy up and restore to
original setting quietly in midnight. However, every pain provides opportunity
for me. Till now, every opportunity makes me surprisingly excited and
graceful.I’m trying to increase the market share outside HK, and I’ll use my
profession to teach soon.
