| 1. | Your story reminds me of my own. I was bored sitting at home with my kid so I started a handbag line. - Tara from WA, January 31, 2008. | | 2. | You are to be commended in more ways than one. Story: I am a mother of 4, as my oldest 25, son and my
youngest is 7. I was a haircutter from the age 17 to 30 and then I
decided to go into something more artistic because I always loved fashion
Being creative as being a single mom and working hard to make ends meet, I
decided to go to fashion design school although I already new how to sew but
wanted to learn more how to design my own patterns and revise them - which
that’s exactly what I had did. Well when I had my last child with my new
husband that I am with now for almost 9 years, I did not need to go back to work
but that is all I knew how to do - work. I was getting bored doing nothing
but cleaning so I had told him that if he wanted to me stay home that he would
have to buy me a sewing machine. I would have my little one in the playpen
and I started making him clothes. Shortly after, I was getting compliments
and the people that I was meeting in stores would ask me If I can make that for
there child, so I did.
Then I decided to to do website in 2000 called Peek-A-Boo Design after singing
these words to my son which were not even in the song 'peeka peeka boo.'
He would always laugh so I said I will name my store, Peek-A-Boo Design.
After working with clothes, I decided to do handmade diaper bag with embroidery.
I made my design and my pattern and started from there. The clothes were
getting to complicated so I decided to take the diaper bag one step further with
the same pattern - instead of putting to big pockets in it I added 2 more
pockets on the side as well. (You can never have enough pockets with the
gadget these kids have today.) Then I took the bag to another level and created
the signature bag. I like to work with funky fabrics, retro fabrics that
call out to you. I decided to protect the fabric, with a protective over it to
make it look like a patent leather look. This material is very hard to work with
but now I am using 2 more sewing machines that seem to be working great so far.
This bag is great - no more messes on the bottom of the bag from spilled milk
and won't get ruined in the rain. It is the best design that I came up with so
far. I have had a lot of feedback from them and they are selling like
crazy.
The only nightmare that I can tell you about is I was making my son teddy bear
snow pants and jacket out of fleece material. When I was all done, I
showed my husband he said something does not look right. I thought he was
crazy at first but when I cut out the pants the bears were upside down. I
guess I was in a rush to get it done that I did not pay attention to which way
the pattern of the fabric was going and started to cut and sew. Well I never did
that again. After that, I always made sure the pattern was all going in
the same direction - small lesson to be learned.
My greatest achievement I would have to say is first of all when you hear the
word 'success,' the first thing that comes to mind would be money. Am I right?
Success to me means believing in yourself when no one else does. Even
though I do not have a lot of money, or my diaper bag is not on a celebrity
shoulders yet, I am very successful in what I have achieved. Being a
single mom is not an easy job, but I was successful, making sure they went down
the right road as they grew up. I was successful even when I left from
being a domestic violence victim. I was successful in buying my own house
while being a single mom when everyone said you can not do it. I was
successful when I gave my children the most valuable advise as they grew up with
me as they know now that they can achieve anything they want which is exactly
what they ever so doing. So when you think about it, everyone is
successful in their own right and if you have success in your life then
everything will follow. Like I tell my 13 year old now, KEEP BELIEVING,
AND FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS AND NEVER GIVE UP... But my biggest achievement in life
are my children. They made me a stronger person and didn't allow me to
give up or quit. I love creating and sewing, and being with my family.
