| My career began in the field of education; fifteen
years as a Special Education teacher and eight as an Education Administrator. I
have always loved fashion and thought one day I would attend fashion design
school; however, there was never time. I didn’t make it to design school, but
with over 30 years of sewing experience and a little talent as an artist, Rives
Parker Handbags and Accessories was born in March 2009.
I use soft-medium temper, embossed croc cow sides and some aniline cow sides,
which look and feel like deer skin and are great for handbags. Leather is both
strong and soft; it can breathe as well as insulate. My target audience is the
design savvy consumer, age 8 to 80. I find inspiration from the world around me.
I keep a sketchpad with me to note shape, colors, design and movement. If I see
a color I like and it is not available in leather, I will mix the color and
paint the leather. I see what I do as art. Art is everywhere, and art is a
handbag!
After 23 years in education, I found my second act by way of a wonderful man
named Arthur Porter. I saw his work and called him. He taught me everything I
needed to know. With a sewing background and affection for drawing and painting,
creating handbags came easily. After making my first bag, I knew I was on to
something.
My collections display elegance and sophistication. I choose quality leathers
to compliment each design. All of my designs encompass incredibly versatile
looks, which can be dressed up or worn casually. They combine glamour with
functionality.
At this point, I have not had a major design nightmare. If or when it happens, I
know it will only be a learning experience. My greatest achievement so far is
the response and referrals that I receive from people who buy my bags. Making
handbags was not something I ever thought I would do. It was just not on the
radar screen. Though it is a relatively new business, it is gaining momentum
daily. I am looking forward to what the future holds for Rives Parker Handbags
and Accessories.
