| Junkprints is a graphics based line based in Brooklyn,
NY. I started the line out of my lil apartment about 2 years ago since then I've
moved the 1 lady operation from my 400 square foot apartment to a lovely studio
space in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Junkprints has been featured on Good Morning
America, the New York Post, the New York Sun, and Bust Magazine and numerous
online, print and TV publications. I also have sold pieces and done work for
some pretty awesome folks and establishments such as the Democratic Convention,
TV on the Radio, O at Home Magazine and numerous blogs.
The word 'green' has been thrown around a lot, but I think ethical and
sustainable are better fits for what we are doing at Junkprints. Not only
ethical in materials but socially accountable. Many of the themes I explore in
the graphics deal with social accountability, as well as the choices is
materials and construction. 80% of my zippers are factory overage, the straps on
my bags come from a closed down belt factory and I use vintage or dead stock
fabric. My bags are made in limited editions and many are one of a kind. Due to
the small scale of the line I'm able to take on custom bag projects and I love
it. We aren't robots, so why do we need a uniform? I'd like to think that my
line promotes individuality.
Junkprints started out as my surface exploration of race and gender in the
media. It's a response to mainstream media's exclusion and skewed representation
of the rest of the American people. One day I found this sewing machine in the
trash, fixed it and started sewing my booty off. Eventually I merged my graphic
design skills with my self taught sewing skills and Junkprints morphed into as a
lifestyle brand put into place to attempt to balance out the playing field. It's
crack for the eyes and spinach for the brain.
When I first started sewing, I didn't know what I was doing and would constantly
run thick materials such as vinyl through my machine, not knowing that I
required a different needle size (then used for say, silk). Safety first! So, I
decided that I needed goggles to protect my eyes from flying broken needles. For
the next 2 months when preparing to sew I looked like I was working in a wood
shop. Needless to say, I eventually worked it out. My greatest achievement
thus far has been able to create a line that financially sustains me while
allowing me to be creative. |
