I, being a type 1 diabetic was always frustrated with carrying around my purse and my diabetes pack. All the insulin cases were bulky, boring, first aidish and geriatric. I thought way can’t someone make something that is small and cool? So, after years of frustration I decided to take embark on the adventure of aDorn. aDorn designs makes “High Style, Low Profile” medical bags. It was born in 2002 with the “2-in-1 handbag” just last year I came out with the “2-in-1 messenger” and I am in the process of designing the next style. One thing people should know is that proceeds from each sale are donated to JDRF, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF is committed to fundraising to find a cure for diabetes.

The handbag is made of a polyester twill and nylon interior. There are two parts, the main purse and then turn it around and unzip the back to find the low profile section which hides the removable “clutch” magnetically tucked away inside and organizes all of your medical supplies, for diabetics its insulin, blood glucose meter, strips, pricker, syringes or pump supplies. The clutch also has a water tight compartment for ice-packs to keep your insulin cool. The Messenger is made of nylon, and has the same clutch feature.

My first time ever manufacturing the handbag we got the bags in from Overseas only to find that the magnets in the back of the purse which hold the clutch in were wrong, and they detracted instead of attracting. We then had to send entire shipment back. Then, when the messenger bags came in they didn’t have the metal logos affixed but instead of taking them back I took a 50% discount and started a sweat shop with friends and family to affix 600 metal logos….. ugh!

Normally it is far and few between some of the complaining emails, but once in awhile you’ll get the praise email that thanks me for an amazing achievement and design that helps people better manage and organize their life and their disease. I can’t tell you how much those emails men to me, they really hit home! My greatest achievement was when a random pharmacy in Dubai found me on the internet and ordered 600 bags to distribute.
