| I graduated from International Fine Arts College
(Miami, FL) with a degree in design. Ever since childhood I was mesmerized by
fashion images and Vogue was my fashion bible, as for a lot of people. My dream
pushed me to the States, where I figured out what I wanted to be. After
graduating I moved to New York and worked for a number of designers. I am part
of the Pakistani high fashion market now since 2001.
I mostly work with leather (all kinds of leather) I am a bohemian at heart so my
inspiration is gathered from all over the place specially nature, music, art. My
forte is textures...the more the merrier, of course keeping balance and harmony
is my most important goal. The inside of the bags is always lined with
leather...giving each bag a solid, structured feel and interesting on the
inside.
When I was in New York I worked for a lot of interesting designers...but on the
sales side of the business. All that inspiration pushed me to design a
collection of my own. When I came back to Pakistan I initially wanted to design
clothes but at the time I found the market not open to experimentation and I
wanted to do something edgy. After a lot of research I figured out that
there were absolutely no major hand bag designers and people didn't have much to
choose from. I took on the challenge and created an awareness and the need for
high end fashion bags. Currently, my line of handbags are mostly for
evening. Everything is painstakingly handmade and hand embroidered. Every design
is just one of and rarely repeated. The bags are very ornate with Swarovski,
semi precious stones, embroidery and appliqué details. I design for The Woman
who wants to make a statement.
Regarding a nightmare story, oh there are so many. Well, when I started out, I
embarked on major experimentation. I had to waste a lot of my initial bags until
I could reach the kind of quality I was looking for. The nightmare is that I
have kept most of my initial disasters to remind me how it all started, although
the sight of them scares the living daylights out of me. However, I feel my best
achievement to date is the fact, that I got the chance to do what I absolutely
love doing. I dream bags...it's a lot of hard work but this is my life.
Besides that another proud moment was when a top league designer of Pakistan was
invited by Boucheron for Paris Couture Week. I designed a line of couture
evening bags to be featured with the Couture collection and Boucheron's jewelry
line. later my collection was also featured at Paris's Joyce Gallery. Designing
that collection pushed me towards my full potential for that time. I wake up
every day with pure excitement of producing something magnificent and that just
keeps me going.
