| Fusing together the cosmopolitan style of New York and
the refined leathers from South America, Luma leather handbags and accessories
come to life bringing a touch of uniqueness and sophistication to the everyday
wardrobe. I started Luma leather in early 2008 teaming up with local
Uruguayan designers and artisans to create accessories with distinctive South
American charm and elegance. Luma leather allows each person – from the
corporate professional to the fashionista–- to browse from a wide selection of
luxury hides and skins, such as: cowhide, hair-on-calfskin or exotic rhea. Each
leather is selected with attention to detail, always looking to obtain
distinctly classic yet trendy results that will appeal to the true handbag
lover.
We use leather because it is one of the most abundant and well know resource
of Uruguay, as agriculture is one of the main resources of the country economy.
(All of the leathers come from animal's bread in free-range farms and are
by-products of the meat industry). We have a strong commitment to the craftsmen
and artisans we work with, ensuring fair wages and healthy work environments
while safeguarding against the use of child labor in the production. In addition
Luma leather supports Reaching U (www.reachingu.org) a children’s and women’s
charity foundations for Uruguay were I also volunteer.
Recently I was getting ready for my first sale event in New York, fortunately
the handbags arrived on time and my mother was coming to help me and she was
bringing along the dust bags that I had made in Montevideo as well. She didn’t
mention it before so I wouldn’t get more nervous but they weren’t ready on time
so she had to brought them unfinished, leaving us still sewing the night before
the show! Fortunately, this journey has been fulfilling on every level making
the lives of everyone involved in this process from making to buying something
we are proud to call Luma.
