| 1. | I like the designs, although i don't carry PU bags, I think the designs are great for Juniors. - ts from WA, March 20, 2008. |
Story: I practically grew up with handbags. My parents have been in the fashion handbag industry for over 20 years. My childhood trips to the office and their factory enabled me to see how handbags are made and how it has evolved with fashion overtime. During my highschool period, my mother established the brand 'Missco Girl' and my excursions to the office on my holidays became opportunities for me to contribute my sense of fashion and creativity into developing the family label. The success my designs received lead me to pursue Fashion Design at Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney prior returning to my roots to continue to design and develop the family label on a full time basis.
Currently I am multi-tasking a lot. I recently completed finalising S/S 2008 collection to be debuted in New York next month (lots of juicy colors and interesting multi-wearable handbags). I am also renovating the Missco Girl website as well as the showroom at my parent's office which includes a section divided for the family label. The journey has been hectic however, it has been a very creative and fulfilling one and I anticipate to experience the same as I begin to researching and collaborate ideas for A/W 2008 Collection.
Missco Girl is made with 100% non-animal material. All Missco Girl products are made in a great range of high quality poly-urethene (PU) material. PU enables my to use a greater range of colors, textures and features to be included in my designs. One example is the new 'distressed' gradient PU I started using this year where the material changes color when it is being stretched.
Young adolescents and adults at work like me, have a desire to be fashionable yet at the same time, be practical about it. I enjoy the occasional night out as well as spending 'quality time' with family, friends and myself. Whether at the office or on-the-go or even at home, today's modern woman needs a bag to help assist with their busy schedules, not just to match their shoes. Missco Girl covers coin purses, clutches, hobos, totes and even the occasional weekender/travelling bag all with interior zip and cell phone pockets in an assortment of PU material. Some with adjustable/detachable handles, charm keyrings and in various hardware details. The great variety Missco Girl encapsulates and the fact I design with a purporse is what I believe, makes my collection unique and special.
Today Missco Girl has evolved into a international label. Mainly sold in Canada and New York however, one can find Missco Girl products in Australia, parts of Europe and the U.S. and recently, in Beijing China. I fly across the globe annually to attend shows, visit the factory and to market research what's hot and what's really accepted by each country's market. This makes my designs to be of international status and to be on target in context of following fashion trends. Being able to Discover new ideas and materials on my travels as well as increasingly able to understand the changing needs of modern woman are elements that inspire my designs for Missco Girl. I believe this concept will continue to inspire and loved by not just me, but also those whose carry Missco Girl handbags under their arms.
Washed PU bags was a bit of a nightmare. One cannot wash PU bags to be 100% identical. The amount of chemicals used to bleach the PU material, how much and how long to wash the PU bags and whether the bags are washed in the first load or the last load of washing all can affect the outlook of the washed PU. Controlling and ensuring the closest consistent washed PU result was not easy. Worse of all was when my orders were processed during the typhoon season in Asia. Washed PU bags takes awhile to dry and the hardware used in my handbags prohibits them from being dried in a dryer nor does the factory possess dryers to dry bags. The bags took even longer to dry during the humid and rainy days and one cannot pack washed PU bags unless its 100% dry because they can go mouldy whilst being exported. In the end, the factory cleared almost a entire floor in their building and filled it with rows of washed PU bags pegged on wires and surrounded by electric fans and factory workers with hair dryers blow-drying them! On the occasional sunny Summer day, if one were to visit the factory he/she will notice washed PU bags laid across the front yard and on all bushes along the roadside. When rain unexpectedly falls it is quite a hilarious sight to see all the workers run out to rescue the bags from getting wet again. In the end, all the bags were exported on time, they were well recieved by our Missco Girl fans and my family and I got a great laugh and great story to share from this experience.
