I didn't start as a designer, I just wanted to learn
how to knit and felt wool. The designing started when I could read other folks
patterns and see where they needed to be changed to work or look better. This
line of bags in general are happy accidents, I would have to knit a dozen or
more prototypes of a design in the past to get it right. During a weird mood I
started cutting the leftover prototypes apart and saddle stitching them
together. The reaction to those remnant bags evolved into the work I'm doing
now.
100% Felted Peruvian wool carries a nostalgic feel for me. Frankly, I can't
count how many of my sweaters my mother accidentally "felted" for me. Sounds
weird but the texture of felted wool is very comforting to me. I've been calling
my work lately "Urban Vintage" I love the 1920's to the 1960's. I take
inspiration from those eras then hand-make the heavy duty felt I use for my
purses, fusing a lining onto the felt, cut then hand assemble each piece with
the utmost love and care. I then taught myself how to knit. Wool is a
renewable resource, the animal isn't killed to harvest the wool. Just rinse out
any of my bags in cold water, air dry and there you go.
My biggest nightmare is last years attempt at the "Market Bag"- I call it
Version 1.0. It had very good colors very bad design. The good news is I sold
some, the BAD news is some of those things are still out there. My biggest
achievement is just doing what I am doing. I finally gotten to the point where I
don't need to make as many prototypes to get the bags I see in my head into my
hands. Designing accessories is a dream job, I sometimes feel guilty that I've
found something that gives me so much contentment and joy every day.
