My name is Guillermo de Orbegoso. I'm a self-taught
fine artist with Art Direction and Fashion Design experience; living in Lima,
Peru. As a fine artist I have been part of various collective gallery shows and
have prepared proposals for urban space renovation. The urban Latin-American
aesthetic has always held a special fascination with me. I'm constantly
influenced by its loud clashing colors, its of techniques and its unconventional
utilization of materials.
For two years I have been exploring the fashion world, starting by gathering my
direct influences and applying them to clothing and accessories line entitled
D'O by Guillermo. To create the bags seen in the attached photos, I utilize
rubber painted with synthetic enamel. My design technique and the images
themselves take inspiration from the mud-flaps on the trucks and buses in Lima.
While wandering the city for inspiration one day, I met a street vendor selling
decorated mud-flaps & knew immediately that I have found my inspiration.
The most taxing parts of the process were to cut and assemble the rubber. These
mud-flaps are extremely strong and difficult to manipulate. I attempted to sew
the parts together, but once I found a thick enough needle, I realized that the
sewing machine damaged the enamel. I then attempted to clinch the parts
together, but this technique proved to be laborious and was prone to deforming
the bags. After several missteps and a frustrating deliberation, the solution
finally came to me; I would use adhesive and tacks. However, an important aspect
of my art is to take found objects out of their customary purpose and give them
new life. In this case, I've taken a charming aspect of Peru's popular art and
made it accessible to a broader audience. |
