Urban:kitty began production in 2005 shortly after I received a new sewing machine as a birthday gift. My need to create something functional and fashionable, two terms not usually associated with handbags these days, soon got the best of me and the first urban:kitty handbag was born. After many compliments and requests, I decided I should give the handbag business a try. My design background begins with an architecture degree and has morphed into graphic design and finally to art director for a local home magazine. Not only am I the designer of urban:kitty handbags, I am also the marketer, salesperson and buyer, too! Thankfully I am no longer the manufacturing department—although each bag that leaves the studio has its finishing touches added on by me. I am currently trying to gain more exposure across the country, so if anyone wants to support an emerging designer with a unique line of bags, let me know!

The styling of an urban:kitty bag sets it apart from the typical black-leather-with-buckle styles that too many women are carrying these days. The Fall 07 collection focuses on a subtle color palette with vibrant linings. Metal hardware and vintage styling create an urban yet classic look. I believe that one of the greatest things a handbag can do for a woman is make her stand apart from the crowd. And more and more women out there are beginning to see how much fun it can be to express themselves through interesting accessories.

What I would really like people to know is that Urban:kitty bags go beyond looking great on your arm. They are very functional. They can be converted into different styles with the flip of a strap and are typically loaded with pockets, essential features that modern women need to get them through the day. Many styles in the collection are also reversible. Made with sturdy upholstery and synthetic leathers, an urban:kitty bag will last through multiple seasons.

There are many challenges for an emerging designer that doesn’t have the luxury of an endless budget. The amount of money that must be spent up front makes it difficult to get through production each season. Once the bags get moving out the door for the season, then it all balances out, but the stress associated with a drained bank account can really take a toll on your attitude towards continuing on. But nothing can compare to the pride that you feel when the praise and compliments start to pour in. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to pursue my passion every day and to feel the gratitude and appreciation of every happy lady that carries and urban:kitty bag.
