| Fort Cloudy is mainly comprised of handmade totes and clutches. We
are currently exploring regular sized purses and bags for musicians, including
guitar pick bags, drum stick bags, and sheet music bags. Our materials consist
of canvas bags with either cotton or flannel lining. Our target audience is
females between the ages of 14 and 40. The unique feature for our bags is the
appliqué work focused around animals, food, and musical instruments.
My background in design is I started out actually sewing
pillows, then moved to scarves, and tried my hand at bags. I feel in love with
the whole bag making process and decided to take the designs from my scarves and
place them on my bags. The whole thing began due to the encouragement of my
mother who owns a local quilt shop. To get some more design ideas I started
looking to my friends’ interests to make them gifts and see if it would work for
my purposes. Our Muffin clutch is actually designed for my friend Muffin's
girlfriend. I thought it would be a cute thing for her to carry around.
For the past 10 years, my mother has been trying to get me
to make my own clothes or purses off of patterns. Well I hate patterns. I would
much rather do it the hard way, through trial and error? The first bag that I
made with sides gave me headaches forever because I refused to get help on the
corners. I guess it is kind of dumb, but I overcame it and I'm glad I did it
myself. Our greatest achievement is finding people that share our enthusiasm
for our bags. We've been invited to several craft shows and other vending
opportunities. It's worth it for me to do because I love seeing how people react
to the things I am making. |
