I find that now after over three years in business
(mind you I started my company at the ripe age of 22...) I understand my
customers needs much more clearly. My collection has evolved to include a wider
range of styles to suit my customer. The collection spans from very edgy bags
like the suspension chain tote to simple yet stylish items like the pleat. I
have also been very focused out the intricacies of how we use our bags, what a
woman needs and how to make her life easier, new improvements include a cell
phone and Blackberry pocket, open pockets for medium sized things and a zipper
pocket for precious items... softer straps and easy closures.
I use cow leather mostly because of the durability factor, my leather is a
natural drum dyed product that feels very soft to the touch and is comfortable
against the body, for hardware I use only brass and change the plating colors
each season based on my mood! My bags are special because I make them from the
nature with inspirations ranging from Hawaiian quilting to Frank Lloyd Wright.
My first collection was created for my senior thesis at Parsons the New School
of Design. Upon completion of the collection I was invited to an open call to
designers for a new store opening. I quickly made a line sheet, created prices
and went to the open call. The response was amazing, the store ordered a huge
amount of bags and I was in business!
My bag creation process is definitely special. Each bag is created as a soft
structure, sculpted with fabric by hand. I then make a pattern, cut and sew a
sample myself. This process of design is quite unique to my company and allows
each and every detail and design decision to be made by me. Because of this I
often get stuck on the "the dream versus the reality" factor. We can only make
what is able to be created.... I have had many a 'handbag' that was simply
impossible... come to my studio I have a pile of handbag corpses which never
lived and are certainly dead! However for me the greatest achievement in the
very fun but often tumultuous lifestyle of a designer is to wake up every
morning, go to my design studio and build a world of my own without boundaries.
