| 1. | Now I know where all my ties disappeared to! - Tom Le Pley from California, April 26, 2007. |

We started as 1 bag. Designed for personal use, this
one lucky bag received so much attention we finally added to the family with a
few more. Currently, we have built the company beyond word of mouth to a website
store and a growing number of boutique locations in the US. Given the uniqueness
of the handbags, the women that carry these bags find that they are stopped in
the middle of the street to ask where they got it. All our bags come with a
warning “Warning: carrying this bag will attract attention.”
All our handbags are made from vintage men’s neckties. This means each bag is
unique and custom made. No two bags are alike. There are endless combinations
and looks that can be derived from the vintage neckties. One bag may be wild
with wild prints, loud colors, and lots of textures, and another could be so
demure in all silk pink neckties.
We strongly believe that
word of mouth is the biggest source of marketing. We only believe that because
that’s how we got started. As it was mentioned before, we started with one bag.
That one bag grew into 20, then 50, then we lost count. Up until a few months
ago, we were so busy making the handbags that our marketing was just the people
carrying them. Again, they attract a lot of attention – not because they are
obnoxious or loud, but because they are so unique and colorful.
Currently, our most popular order is for a Heirloom Custom Handbag (or two or
three). These handbags are composed of client-supplied neckties – usually from a
deceased and loved one. Given that each handbag is individually designed, we
have a design team that is responsible solely for designing each bag. At one
particular time we had a really large order to fill and so had to call in
“re-enforcement” designers to help us meet our design needs. Well, some of these
designer brought their boyfriends to help – and let’s just say, all the handbags
those poor boyfriends designed had to be remade later. Shhh,...don’t tell. They
still think their handbags made it to the sewing room.
One would think that the attention these bags receive would be what made it all
worth it, but what really makes us happy is filling the Heirloom Custom Handbag
orders. These orders are so special because each necktie we are placing in the
handbags means something special to our client. We have had many daughters bring
us their father’s neckties and ask if we can put them into handbags for them and
their female relatives – this is our favorite thing to do, because we know that
whenever they carry their Heirloom Custom Handbag, they will think of their
loved father. |
